Angelica Heritage Days – Saturday & Sunday, August 6th & 7th

Civil War tours of Until the Day Dawn Cemetery, a roque (croquet) tournament, and a variety of musical entertainment will highlight the 42nd annual Heritage Days, to be held the weekend of August 6th & 7th in Angelica. The event is sponsored by the Angelica Booster Citizens.

There are more than 100 Civil War veterans buried in Until the Day Dawn. In observation of the 150th anniversary of the start of that terrible conflict, several of these old soldiers will “come to life” as part of Heritage Days tours of the cemetery. Members of the 136th NY reenactment group will portray the Union veterans, talking in turn about their wartime experiences as the tour group moves from one gravesite to another. Visitors also will hear from Calvin Fairbank, the famed abolitionist who lived his last years in Angelica. Fairbank served 17 years in Kentucky prisons for his anti-slavery activities.
The cemetery tours are Saturday at 12:30 and 2:30 pm and on Sunday at 1:30 pm. Get tour tickets at the Booster Citizens tent in the park, the cost is $5.00; transportation provided from park to cemetery.

Founded in 1805, the oldest township in Allegany County, Angelica bills itself as “A Town Where History Lives”. The 90-acre Park Circle Historic District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Croquet is an Angelica tradition that dates back to the 19th century. The unique court—a clay surface with oak plank sideboards—will be the stage for the semifinals of the annual tournament on Saturday, at 10:00 am & 2:30 pm. The championship match is set for Sunday at 1:30 pm.

The weekend entertainment begins Friday night at 7:00 pm with the Camelot Choraleers Variety Show in the Angelica Free Library auditorium (free-will offering benefits Methodist Church Uganda mission). There is live music at Black-Eyed Susan Acoustic Café, 22 West Main, with Gary Boldt & Debra Cagwin playing at 7:30 (tip jar donation).
Hometown favorite Salty Austin returns to lead the Saturday music lineup with an 11:00 am performance in the Park Circle bandstand. Next up, at 12:30 pm, is The Band of Brothers, followed at 2:30 pm by Sound Foundation, and Mountain Air performing at 4:00 pm.
On Saturday night there is live music at Black-Eyed Susan with Chris Squier performing at 7:30 pm. Zoar plays at 9:00 pm under the tent at the American House & Hotel, 128 West Main (cover charge).
On Sunday afternoon, the Fraterrigo Family Band will perform at 12:00 Noon in the bandstand. Playing at 1:30 pm will be the Twin Tiers Community Band, followed by the Quigg Hollow Band at 3:00 pm.
Corporate sponsors of the Heritage Days entertainment are: Angelica Enterprises Inc., Angelica Spring Company, Angelica Winery, Bainbridge Family Farm, Brown & Powers Funeral Home, Community Bank, Hart’s Jewelry, Phillips Angelica Forest Products, PR Engine Science, and Steuben Trust Company.
